Be part of history and impact the future.

In 1964, Civil Rights Movement college students created Mississippi Freedom Schools to lift up Black children who were not getting a quality education – not learning to read.

Become a teacher-activist.

Almost 60 years later, an alarming number of children of color do not read on grade level. Nashville Freedom Schools was founded to address the literacy disparity in our community.

It is up to you to change the world.

Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools© founder and president emerita, Marian Wright Edelman said, “A lot of people are waiting for Martin Luther King, Jr. or Mahatma Gandhi to come back – but they are gone. We are it. It is up to us. It is up to you.”

Servant Leader Interns

There are many summer programs in our community but none like Nashville Freedom Schools. Our award winning culturally relevant curriculum is taught by teacher-activist Servant Leader Interns. Many have backgrounds and lived experiences similar to our scholars. Some started as scholars themselves, then moved on to become junior scholars and then the college student role models they once admired. Servant Leader Interns bring their talents, skills, enthusiasm and love to make a difference in the lives of others. And in doing so, they change their own.
